What is a heart beat?
The cardiac cycle is one contraction followed by one relaxation of the heart. This is also called one heart beat and on average in a human there are about 70 heart beats every minute.

Each heartbeat can be 'heard' from outside the body as two soft 'thumps'. The first sound is made when the muscles of the ventricles contract to force the blood out of the heart. The second sound occurs when the ventricles relax and blood is prevented from re-entering the heart.
